Instead, the AI safety researcher delivered a stark warning: “The world is in peril.” His resignation letter, published on X, marked the latest in a string of high-profile departures from the companies building the most powerful AI systems—and it’s forcing a reckoning about whether the technology is advancing faster than our ability to control it.

Sharma’s departure was not an isolated event. Just days later, Zoe Hitzig, an AI safety researcher at OpenAI, revealed she had resigned over the company’s decision to begin testing advertisements on ChatGPT. Her concern wasn’t about commercialization per se—it was about the unprecedented potential for manipulation when advertising is built on archives of users’ most intimate conversations.

“People tell chatbots about their medical fears, their relationship problems, their beliefs about God and the afterlife,” Hitzig wrote in a New York Times essay. “Advertising built on that archive creates a potential for manipulating users in ways we don’t have the tools to understand, let alone prevent.”

The resignations extend beyond individual researchers. At xAI, Elon Musk’s AI company, two cofounders and five other staff members have departed since last week. While none publicly cited specific reasons, the exits follow recent controversy over Grok generating sexualized images of non-consenting women and spewing racist content—issues that prompted a European Union investigation.

What the Research Actually Shows

Capability leaps have outpaced most predictions. Matt Shumer, CEO of AI writing assistant HyperWrite, captured the shift in a viral post: “These new AI models aren’t incremental improvements. This is a different thing entirely.” His virtual assistant now produces highly polished writing and near-perfect software applications from minimal prompts—capabilities that seemed years away just months ago.

Risks once theoretical are now manifest. The 2026 International AI Safety Report, chaired by Turing Award winner Yoshua Bengio, documents how concerns that existed only in academic papers—AI-enabled cyberattacks, the generation of dangerous pathogens—have become real in the past year alone.

Unanticipated psychological harms have emerged as perhaps the most surprising development. “One year ago, nobody would have thought that we would see the wave of psychological issues that have come from people interacting with AI systems and becoming emotionally attached,” Bengio told Al Jazeera. “We’ve seen children and adolescents going through situations that should be avoided.”

Yet the report’s very existence highlights a paradox: while scientific understanding of AI risks has improved dramatically, regulatory frameworks remain fragmented and inadequate. The researchers leaving their posts aren’t abandoning the field—they’re sounding alarms precisely because they believe internal mechanisms for ensuring safety are insufficient.

For policymakers, the message is unambiguous. The people who built these systems, who understand their inner workings better than anyone, are increasingly convinced that external oversight is not just desirable but essential. The question is whether governments can move quickly enough to establish that oversight before the next wave of capabilities arrives.

The coming months will test whether the AI industry can maintain public trust while pushing technological boundaries. For now, the resignations serve as a warning from those who know the technology best: the current trajectory is unsustainable, and the window for course correction may be narrower than it appears.
