AI Safety Researchers Are Quitting in Droves. Here’s Why That Matters

Something is shifting in the AI industry, and the people tasked with keeping it safe are sounding alarms on their way out.

The wave of resignations comes at a pivotal moment for artificial intelligence. Companies like Anthropic have built their brands on being “safety-conscious” alternatives to the race-to-the-bottom mentality of their competitors. Yet Sharma’s departure suggests that even the most cautious players are struggling to maintain their ethical commitments in the face of commercial pressure.

The concerns these researchers are raising aren’t theoretical. In his resignation letter, Sharma cited repeated instances where corporate values failed to govern actual behavior. At OpenAI, Hitzig pointed to a more specific threat: the introduction of advertising into ChatGPT creates “potential for manipulating users in ways we don’t have the tools to understand, let alone prevent.” When people share their medical fears, relationship problems, and spiritual beliefs with AI assistants, building ad targeting on that foundation raises unprecedented ethical questions.

The timing is significant. These departures coincide with what industry observers are calling an unprecedented acceleration in AI capabilities. Capabilities are outpacing safeguards. Yet the money keeps flowing. Tech giants plan to spend approximately $600 billion on AI infrastructure in the coming year alone. That gravitational pull, as one analyst described it, exerts irresistible force. Memory chip makers sell to the highest bidder. Skilled employees follow the same logic. The losers are everyday consumers and, potentially, the ethical frameworks meant to guide development.

At Anthropic, this tension has reached a breaking point. The Pentagon is reportedly considering cutting ties with the company over its refusal to allow military use of Claude for mass surveillance or fully autonomous weapons. The startup’s two red lines—no surveillance of Americans, no fully autonomous weapons—have become friction points with its largest potential government customer. Which side will yield?

What Comes Next

The questions facing the AI industry are no longer abstract. The 2026 International AI Safety Report, chaired by Bengio, documents concrete risks from advanced AI systems that are already operational. About one billion people now use AI tools regularly. In advanced economies, an estimated 60% of jobs could be vulnerable to AI disruption depending on adoption patterns.

Yet regulation remains fragmented. There is no joint international framework to keep AI development in check, even as experts warn that the technology is advancing in “rapid and unpredictable ways.” The European Union has launched investigations—most recently into xAI regarding sexually explicit AI-generated images—but enforcement moves slower than innovation.

For Sharma, Hitzig, and the others who have walked away, the calculation was simple: they could no longer reconcile their work with their concerns. Their departures leave the industry with fewer voices asking hard questions at exactly the moment when those questions matter most. The AI sector has always promised to build the future. Whether that future includes the people building it—and whether anyone will be left to ask if we should—remains an open question.
